Our mission was to create a tropical garden sanctuary in Suburbia with hidden areas, surprises and bursts of colour, combined with vegetable options that would we could serve straight from the garden to our plate. Our story started with a dream to create a living experience that we did not need a holiday from. This took careful planning. Prior to even the house being built, we began dreaming of the perfect merge of our modern new house to a tropical garden setting. Experience in landscaping and an admiration for Burke’s Back Yard, had us drawing plans well into the early hours of many mornings in the lead up to our move. And so the collection of plants began.
On moving day we had more plants than furniture. The moment we moved in, our garden became a complete obsession. Blood, sweat and sleepless nights went into planning, planting and creating the Garden that today surrounds our home, The Shebeen. The name Shebeen has origins from both South Africa and Ireland (Shibin).
Before we knew it, our passion for gardening became a hobby and our plants became collections. Our garden boasts 29 different varieties of hibiscus. Our veggie garden has a strong focus on sustainability with composting and worm farms ensuring that our waste goes straight back into enriching our soil.
From the creation of our garden stemmed others, though cuttings we helped establish the garden of friends. And so our story takes us to the establishment of our plant stall, which features in the our driveway of 4 Bunjulu Close, Cooya Beach. In this way we can share the beauty we collected with our local community.
